I was an NGO worker for several years in South Sudan and West Africa. I met my wife there. I would never immigrate to Africa to resettle. Given the corruption, extreme poverty and lack of infrastructure, it's almost as if you have no freedom and peace of mind. Every day you have to negotiate prices and deal with lazy bureaucracy. As an American, why do this to yourself. Visiting as a tourist is enough.

The problem with franchises in any food industry here not just with Pizza are, they skimp a lot on the toppings that matter. ie: "Chicken", "Beef", "Pork" and "Sausage". Hello Tomato and Smack Pizza are not really what I would consider franchises you would probably only find them in the Johannesburg area. Because of that alone, they do not skimp on toppings, because its about the customer experience, not just profits.

Know a guy who is ethnic Ugandan, born and bought up in USA but his parents are Ugandan. Guy lived in USA all his life but was huge into this back to continent (Africa) trend. I myself, am in leather & leather footwear manufacturing and exports. I met that Ugandan guy as buyer agent and we became friends. Guy quit his buyer agency job to start a tannery in Uganda. His first and main complaint was no matter how hard he tried, locals would ALWAYS peg and treat em as American. For 9-5, freelancers etc this is not life changing but if you're in traditional manufacturing, if all suppliers give you "American price" but give your competitor Ugandan price despite you doing your very best to integrate there , can be disheartening. Guy spent 6 years trying to float a tannery in Uganda before returning to USA. His parents were totally against this guy going back to Africa saying they left Uganda cos it has problems that couldn't be resolved individually.

But Africa is a continent like America is and there are a lot of countries in both of them. So using Africa doesn't tell me much, its like using Brazil for America and people thinking the United States is like Brazil. America is incredibly expensive so it is hardly surprising that in the developing world is cheaper, I would be surprised if South Africa was way significantly cheaper than Tanzania or Kenya.

Overall you are going to have to work hard, wait, earn your way, establish trust, earn respect and leave pride at the door, and learn the customs and culture of the host country or continent. Most times, living in America there is a level of entitlement where people still expect to have things their way simply because they are Americans without the work. The US is in a sue happy, victim pandering season, where wrongs can be argued and justified, therefore, when people go to Africa or other places overseas, they have a difficult time adjusting because no one is giving hand outs, catering to the nonsense, and you have to navigate and deal with challenges. Imagine actually having to work hard and be patient, where entitlement and rudeness gets you nowhere. This is imo, one of the reasons a lot of Americans return to the US because that safety net is gone. Even in cases where they are being done wrong, that automatic alarm they can pull to get things done is not there and they have to work through that or actually realize they are not going to get their way. In the US any and everything is almost news worthy and you can complain about just about anything and that molehill becomes a mountain. Imagine a place where they just send you home and tell you there is nothing they can do or you have to wait, or there is no urgency. Most people especially Americans cannot handle that because there isn't enough practice in conflict resolution skills, resiliency or knowing when to let go of a matter even if you're in the right. This is because having a melt down online, threatening to sue, posting on SM and being rude often get results. Therefore, it's easier for ppl to go back to the United States. I personally don't have a lot of confidence in the legal or law enforcement system in Africa. If something happens, I don't want to be there and trying to deal with all the red tape. In addition the US currently has way better medical treatment facilities and access, and I don't want to change that. My family would take long vacations every summer and traveled throughout the year to other places. Rather than uproot your entire family, consider keeping your home base in the US and just explore other places before making drastic decisions.

The overwhelming number of African Americans going to Africa are broke and self deluded. They either failed to find success in the US and see Africa as a shortcut to that success or want to escape racism but discover that they do not fit within the new culture. The return to Africa "movement" has failed.
